Now in its fifth year, the Imagine Cup has grown to be a truly global competition focused on finding solutions to real world issues.
The 2007 Theme is Education. This year, Microsoft is calling on young programmers, artists and technologists around the world to "imagine a world where technology enables a better education for all." We’re challenging students to bring their ideas to life in a multifaceted competition that comprises nine categories, each catering to a different technological or artistic affinity. Students’ work will reflect valuable, real world solutions, while giving them the opportunity to compete for cash prizes. When coupled with the power of technology the potential of young people is unlimited and the ideas they develop for the Imagine Cup could significantly improve the lives of millions of people around the world. In this competition, everyone wins.
I was asked to be one of the judges at the project evaluation for the best project from pakistan for the imagine up in the Software Design category. We had some great projects and the competition was very good. the best project came from LUMS lahore it was a class recording software with some very cool features. the project whch can 2nd came from a very remote place of pakistan, nawabshah. It was great to see someone from such remote location to bring up such a good software. the software was a grid computing software.

TechEd US 2007: SOA and Web Services Track Schedule

The complete abstract can be found on the TechEd site.

Visual Studio Orcas Express

Microsoft has just released a Community Tech Preview download That was handy, because I generally prefer to bottom-quote, and that's a pain in the ass when the email is HTML. So when I installed Outlook 2007 I was annoyed that Ctrl-Shift-O didn't work any more.
After a bunch of fumbling around, I finally discovered that if you open a message and edit it (Message->Other Actions->Edit), you can then change it to plain text (Options->Plain text). Well, being a keyboard guy, I got pretty tired of doing that, so now I have the following key sequence committed to muscle memory:
Enter (open message)
Alt H X E (edit message)
Alt P L (convert to plain text)
Alt H R P (reply)
Which, honestly, sucks, but is maybe 100 times as fast as doing the same thing with the mouse."

Microsoft Announces Silverlight

You can read the press release here or visit the Silverlight home page for more information. I've changed the settings in IIS from Anonymous Access to Integrated Windows Authentication. However, now I'm getting the error message: "Security settings for this service require 'Anonymous' Authentication but it is not enabled for the IIS application that hosts this service."
Disabling anonymous access requires coordinating the settings in IIS and in your service configuration. Those two sources must be in agreement about whether anonymous access is expected. IIS is already using Windows authentication in this case, so let's look at what needs to happen to the service configuration file. I'm assuming that this is IIS6 so the only network transport we're talking about here is HTTP.
There are two cases depending on whether you want the protocol that gets exposed to be HTTP or HTTPS. The simplest is to keep using HTTP since that's probably what you were using if anonymous access was allowed in the past. To switch off anonymous access with HTTP, you need to set the security mode to TransportCredentialOnly.
<basichttpbinding>
<binding>
<security mode="TransportCredentialOnly">
<transport clientcredentialtype="Windows">
</security>
</binding>
</basichttpbinding>
Note that TransportCredentialOnly is not supported for every binding (in this case we're using BasicHttp). For WSHttp, the only choice is going to be to use HTTPS. To switch off anonymous access with HTTPS, you need to set the security mode to Transport.
<wshttpbinding>
<binding>
<security mode="Transport">
<transport clientcredentialtype="Windows">
</security>
</binding>
</wshttpbinding>
Other bindings can be made to work in this situation as well, including custom bindings. I'm just showing you the most common examples. I hope I’ll be able to speak on them soon in some MS event
· P2P / People Near Me: The P2P platform comprises powerful native APIs that help you build peer-to-peer applications. The functionality in the Vista platform takes care of the infrastructure for discovery, connection, and communication between applications, whether we’re talking about two parties or on a multi-party mesh. The P2P functionality transparently plugs into DNS, so peers can easily find and communicate with each other across the internet. And the People Near Me feature locates other users on the same Internet access point. The platform can even create an ad-hoc network directly between users who aren’t connected to the Internet.
· RSS Platform: the RSS platform lets you build RSS-enabled applications without rewriting the basic building blocks of RSS infrastructure. The Common Feed List, Feed Synchronization Engine, and Feed Store in Windows Vista give you support for all major ATOM and RSS formats, background scheduled updates, and APIs that expose a simple object model for feeds. Including RSS support in your application has never been easier.

Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) for Partners

The term Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) is widely used in the context of implementing the messaging capabilities of a service oriented infrastructure. In many cases, these forces have driven the deployment of new technologies and the adoption of new behaviors, adding multiple layers to an already complex set of issues that must be navigated. Architects are searching for a solution to manage this complexity. SOA, ESB, Software as a Service, Web 2.0, and Edge are all elements of the solution, but are they the complete picture? Are they a sufficient answer to the issues? Can they be used together in a productive and efficient fashion? We have the opportunity now to think about what the software architecture of the future looks like; for software architects to take a step back and to forecast what lies over the horizon. To move beyond SOA we must find a way to connect the user edge of software development to the existing services infrastructure of the enterprise; to reconnect the people to the platform. This keynote examines these issues and discusses Microsoft’s vision for the future.

Pakistan Developers Conference 2006

It was one of the greatest experiences in my life to speak at PDC 2006 and to interact with other speakers. Over 4 days, attendees will learn about the strategies and technologies that Microsoft is delivering over the next year, such as BizTalk Server, .NET Framework 3.0, and Office 2007. Three technical tracks will provide depth and detail into best practices for building BPM solutions, guidance for advancing your SOA, and using the latest development tools and technologies for connecting people, processes and information. A fourth track will focus on the business value of SOA and BPM for both customers looking to optimize their application infrastructure/business processes and for partners looking to expand their SOA & BPM practices. Whether you need to get up to speed fast, or are ready to dive deep, this is the event for technical training, networking, and business development for partners and customers interested in Microsoft’s view of SOA, BPM, and Connected Systems.
We are now accepting session submissions for each of the four conference tracks listed below. Sessions are 1 hour in length and should include time for Q&A. Technical track sessions should have a target level of 300 or higher. Non-Microsoft speakers will receive a $1000 stipend. Please send your session submissions to btstpm@microsoft.com including proposed session title, abstract, speaker, and associated track. Session submission will close on July 21st.
Conference ContentEach session at the Microsoft SOA & Business Process Conference should be designed to expand attendees knowledge of key emerging technologies, demonstrate proven strategies for implementing solutions, explain Microsoft’s long-term strategy and roadmap, and/or add value to their organization’s service oriented and business process solution portfolio.
Service Oriented ArchitectureIT organizations of all sizes are increasingly looking at ‘Software as a Service’ as the paradigm through which they will deliver value to the business. Services are becoming increasingly important to internal IT and business customers as well as across organizational boundaries to trading partners and compliance organizations. The SOA track will provide clear guidance on how to apply expertise from Microsoft and its partners to this emerging application portfolio strategy.
Some of the challenges to be explored include exposing IT assets as services, composing services into business processes, and consuming services within new user experiences. Technologies and topics covered will include: Host Integration, Windows Communication Foundation (Microsoft’s WS-* implementation), Windows Workflow Foundation, BizTalk Server 2006, process methodology, Microsoft Operations Manager, AJAX, Microsoft Office 2007, and Windows Server 2003.
Business Process ManagementThe challenges of aligning cross-functional processes, improving organizational effectiveness, and enhancing customer relationships have made business process management a top priority of both business and IT alike. By attending the Business Process Management track you will learn about the state of the BPM market, how to make the business case for BPM, best practices and technology strategies for enabling process improvements, and understanding the partner opportunities for targeting BPM solutions on the Microsoft platform. Microsoft will present our vision and roadmap for our “People-ready Process” strategy, enabled by upcoming technology innovation across the next 12 months such as BizTalk Sever 2006 R2, Office SharePoint Server 2007, Office InfoPath 2007, Office Visio 2007, Office SharePoint Designer 2007, and Windows Workflow Foundation.
Connected Systems Technology and ProductsUnder the Connected Systems Technologies and Products track you’ll find deep, technical sessions with practical guidance on building applications using the latest developer tools and frameworks from Microsoft. From low level foundational technologies such as Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation, Windows Presentation Foundation and CardSpace up to the enterprise class server BizTalk Server 2006, these sessions will treat your inner developer to best practices learned from the pros.
Business ValueThe Business Value track will focus on the business opportunities of Service Oriented Architecture and Business Process Management for both customers looking to optimize their processes and for partners looking to expand their practices. Whether you are focused on SOA and BPM within your own organization or in the broader marketplace, this track will demonstrate proven strategies for identifying opportunities and maximizing the return on your investments.
Sponsors & ExhibitorsSponsorship and exhibition opportunities are also available to partners to showcase their latest solutions and technologies demonstrate their newest innovations, allowing attendees to test-drive key technologies and receive one-on-one, informed answers to questions. If you are interested in sponsorship, please contact Robert Bannerman at robann@microsoft.com.
For general event information or to register as an attendee, visit the event web site at www.impactevents.com/biztalkconference.

I have been Awarded Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Award

It’s a great honor for me that Microsoft has selected me for this esteemed award. On 7th June I received a letter from FAST-NU that I have to be a judge at Open House (a Software competition for the graduating batch to show their final project). The final 2 rounds were held at IBA and the selected entries from previous round were competing in it. The judges panel included Waqar Khamisani (Microsoft ISV Manager Pakistan), Dr. Saeed Ghani (Chairman CS and MIS, IBA), Dr. Shahid Shameem, Dr. Amir Raza<u2:p></u2:p>, Rehan Ghayor (Sr. Manager MIS, IBA), Talha Mahmood and My self. Let’s examine the other parts of this framework
Service Runtime
The service runtime layer contains the behaviors that occur only during the actual operation of the service, that is, the runtime behaviors of the service. E.g. Instancing, throttling, error handling etc.
Messaging
The messaging layer shows the formats and exchange patterns of the data. WS Security enables security at the message layer while WS Reliable Messaging channel enables the guarantee of message delivery. The encoders present a range of encodings that can be used to suit the needs of the message.

Activation and Hosting

This is the part where service is started by analyzing its activation options. There are two typoes of Dependency Properties
1. By backing your common language runtime property with a dependency property. This Includes support for styling, databinding, animation, default values, value expressions, property invalidations, or inheritance.
2. Attached properties are properties that can be set By the child or contained element for/of its parent or Container Object.

This Dependency property system is the core component for the Avalon. I personally really adored this approch of microsoft.

Encounter with the Avalon Kind

I was working on the Microsoft Presentation layer (Avalon) and had a strange feeling that I’m working in good old days of HTML but just an advance version of the HTML. Jokes aside Microsoft has given Framework and Tool developers their long awaited desire of generating and persisting UI in XML format. The thing that impressed me most is the flexibility in creating Controls e.g. I can have a button and in a button I can have a Panel in that panel I can have images, text ect. The simplicity of XAML combined with the power of Avalon has made this Presentation Layer Framework a very elegant piece of Software Engineering. But I do have some fears about it as how it will perform in a Real Application with the complexity of User Requirement is involved. I hope and feel that Avalon will come good and Microsoft have finally nailed it right this time around.

Framework Description

Finally I finished scripting the Description of the Framework :). There were many things to talk about but the dilemma was not what to mention but rather how much of each element to state, I hope that I got it right. Following is the Post-Development draft for the Framework

"Framework provides a mechanism that guides programmers through a proper order of steps via a common interface to implement business vocabularies in a systematic format and technical structure. Framework, consisting of specialized APIs, services, and tools, is built around the concept of providing technological support for reducing knowledge as well as time programmers’ needs to built extensible applications. Framework is prevalent in the area of .Net based desktop designs.
At the heart of the Framework is an Application Container and a Framework Class Library (FCL).The Application Container constitutes an environment for servicing and running WinForms based application that inhabits FCL. FCL is a managed code library of classes and interfaces that define a contract of cooperation between application and the container itself. Framework is tailored around the concept of Thin Client. Framework Security Administration Panel implements IoC (Inversion of Control) to provide integration with Enterprise Business Application.

Framework provides,
1) Secure Client-Server Communication (based on Symmetric key Encryption as part of Security sub-package of Microsoft Enterprise Library Block).
2) Dynamic Download of Business Components.
3) XML based data-binding model – Performs auto-binding of WinForms to domain objects and vice versa.
4) Dynamic Security - dynamic menu generation and tasks (Action Buttons), as per the assigned user permissions/rights.
5) Theme Builder and Appling Theme – Theme builder generate user desired XML based Theme which automatically applies to application to give it a consistent look & feel.

Framework is built exercising .NET Remoting, XML and .NET Microsoft Enterprise Library Block.
Along with Framework development, C# code generation tool was also developed which Generates PONO reflected against existing database schema of different styles."

Presenting VS 2005

Previous week have been very tuff, I was to give presentations on Microsoft VS 2005 and also have to complete the Web alteration of the Framework. Presentations were a pre-Release Activity of VS 2005 (Whidbey) and SQL Server 2005 (Yukon). There were around 10-12 Software Engineer attending so it was good to have so many people to talk about and experience the new features of VS 2005. As a presenter it was a immense experience to present such existing features. I gave presentation on the following topics

Creating Professional Looking Windows Forms Applications

Deploying Applications with ClickOnce

Building Data-bound Microsoft Windows Forms Applications

Using New Features in .NET CF 2.0

Programming the Actions Pane

Programming with Visual Studio Tools for the Microsoft Office System (VSTO)

One topic which I also presented in the training of Yukon was SQL Server .NET Integration.

As per the Alteration of the framework to WEB framework, it’s in middle of somewhere.
